Already in some of the earliest surviving traces of the Fenian heroic tradition in medieval Irish literature, in similarly early references to historical Fianna, and in later Gaelic romance and folktale, there is the notion of travel across the sea. will consider the special significance of Fionn and his men in the maritime context.
