A Close Shave! – Barber Shop Stories

National Library of Scotland

Scottish barber and social satirist John Kay published his first caustic caricature in 1784. His biting wit and satirical style became so popular that Kay refurbished his barber’s shop to sell prints of his colourful clientele. There’s certainly a story behind every print, and many a close shave… Storytellers Jan Bee Brown and Beverley Casebow toast the entrepreneurs of the Enlightenment, from notorious publican John Dowie to dedicated follower of fashion Miss Sibilla Hutton, with audacious aeronauts, dodgy doctors and stony-broke bankers.
