Growing Up With Books

SSC

Explore the world of children’s books with an impressive selection from
the Museum collections ranging from the 16th to mid-20th-century. There
will be familiar stories like Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows and
Little Red Riding Hood, but also some surprises – such as a book from
1725 with a connection to Bonnie Prince Charlie! Personal stories are
told through inscriptions, scraps and handmade stories. Discover how
children learnt to read, what subjects they were taught and what nursery
rhymes and fairy tales your great grandparents would have read.

Developed by the Scotland’s Early Literature for Children Initiative
(SELCIE) at the University of Edinburgh, in partnership with Museum of
Childhood.
