Throughout 2025-2026, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival in collaboration with the Scottish Storytelling Forum are delivering a creative development project led by Deaf Creative Tania Allan, supporting a small group of Deaf BSL apprentices as they develop their storytelling and performance skills through regular workshops and creative practice sessions.
The programme explores traditional storytelling methods, Deaf heritage storytelling, visual narratives, audience engagement, and creative expression through BSL, helping apprentices build confidence in creating and sharing original stories while celebrating storytelling as a powerful visual and cultural art form.
Alongside the apprenticeship programme, a small pool of specialist interpreters are also developing their skills within live storytelling environments, including performance signing and voice-over work for performances and events. The project encourages collaboration between Deaf and hearing storytelling communities, championing Deaf-led creative practice and creating more inclusive storytelling experiences. Apprentices are currently preparing for shared storytelling events and public performance opportunities later this year, including working alongside hearing apprentices as part of Stories on the Way.
“Deaf storytelling has its own cultural identity, rhythm, and creative possibilities.” – Tania Allan
