Scotland & Canada: Isobel Gunn

Scottish Storytelling Centre

In 1805, a young Orkney lass brazenly disguised herself as a boy and was hired as a labourer by the Hudson Bay Company. Their destination – the vast area of wilderness known as Rupert’s Land! This gruelling adventure is brought to life by Canadian storyteller Deborah Dunleavy, taking on the role of Isobel Gunn between 1805 – 1808 and the final days of her life some sixty years later. Based on true accounts, the piece unfolds as an epic storytelling poem set to orchestrated music by composer
Howard Alexander. Developed with the support of Canada Council for the
Arts.
